Billy Joe Saunders says dream fight against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez could scupper rival’s place in history

Billy Joe Saunders will”take pleasure” in ruining Mexican fans’ vacations by beating their protagonist Saul’Canelo’ Alvarez.
Unbeaten WBO super-middleweight winner Saunders says his fantasy fight would be against Canelo the May celebration weekend on which the Mexican boxes, on Cinco de Mayo.
“That’s because he’s the head of boxing and I’d like the chance to beat him,” Saunders told Sky Sports. “This is the really scary thing – I understand that I could take action.
“I would enjoy ruining Cinco de Mayo for its Mexican lovers.”
When Gennadiy Golovkin held the IBF, WBA and WBC gold of the division saunders held that the WBO middleweight title. Canelo conquer Golovkin after a draw in their first fight, and will next go two divisions up to battle WBO light-heavyweight winner Sergey Kovalev.
However he retains WBA and WBC belts at middleweight, and Saunders believes they have been on a crash course.
He said:”I saw Canelo fight Ryan Rhodes and Matthew Hatton. I’ve known since day one since I put that our paths could cross. I dreamed knew, when we did what could occur.
“Just the same as David Lemieux – that I always knew our paths would cross, too, and they also did. Just the like becoming world winner – I always knew I’d do it, and I did.”
The just defeat at a career that has brought world titles in three branches to him of canelo was contrary to Floyd Mayweather.
“Having a fighter such as Canelo you can’t go in the ring using a game-plan,” Saunders said. “You will want to think:’That is my one and only opportunity to change my title from being good to good’.
“[Former coach ] Jimmy Tibbs always said there’s a huge difference. When I said someone was a fighter, then Jimmy could say:’No, Muhammad Ali and Rocky Marciano were great fighters – that guy is a fantastic fighter’.
“Canelo isn’t excellent. He is good.
“I might seem terrible in 10 fights in a row however if you put Canelo facing me, it’s another ball-game.
“A fighter like me? My personality has overcome him before, and I think I can do it again.”
Saunders had previously said, when linking up with promoter Eddie Hearn:”Styles make fights. [Canelo] had all sorts of problem. I believed Lara nicked that fight when Canelo was in his prime. Currently Canelo has knee shoulder and supports supports.”
Saunders will defend his world title to KSI vs Logan Paul on November 9 on the undercard.
